Skin cancer screening

Skin cancer is a common problem in Switzerland. Broadly speaking, there are two types: white skin cancer and black skin cancer (melanoma).

Black skin cancer

Relative to its population, Switzerland has the highest number of melanoma cases among European countries. Melanoma, or malignant melanoma, is the most dangerous form of skin cancer because it can metastasize. Early detection is therefore very important, as it increases the chances of survival for those affected. Although malignant melanoma is more common in older people, it also affects young people. This is precisely why skin checkups are advisable at any age, especially if there is a family history of skin cancer.

White skin cancer

Non-melanoma skin cancer is common and can sometimes be particularly insidious. Contrary to what its name suggests, this type of skin cancer can appear in various colors—ranging from light red to dark brown. Sometimes, non-melanoma skin cancer may also appear simply as a scaly patch, nodular changes in the skin, or a wound that won’t heal. Non-melanoma skin cancer is much more common than melanoma, but it is also less dangerous because it rarely metastasizes. There are many causes for this; one risk factor is sun exposure. Non-melanoma skin cancer usually develops on areas of the skin that are heavily exposed to sunlight, such as the nose, forehead, lips, ears, or the backs of the hands.

There are various forms of non-melanoma skin cancer. We distinguish, among other things, between basal cell carcinomas, squamous cell carcinomas, Bowen’s disease, and precancerous lesions, known as actinic keratoses.

Treatment of Skin Cancer

If a conspicuous skin change is discovered, the dermatologist usually takes a small tissue sample. Depending on the type of skin cancer, an appropriate therapy is recommended. In the case of white skin cancer, these range from superficial therapies using creams, photodynamic light therapy or cryotherapy (icing) to surgical removal. When a melanoma is diagnosed, it is always necessary to surgically remove the skin cancer with a safety margin.

Early detection of skin cancer is important. In this way, effective therapy can be initiated and the quality of life can be significantly improved.

Self-check

Self-check helps with early detection

If skin cancer is detected early, it is almost always curable. This makes it all the more important to be aware of changes in your skin and to have them checked.
