Eyelid lift / eyelid correction (blepharoplasty)

Have eye bags and drooping eyelids medically treated and removed.

Description

As the years go by, the elasticity of the skin and the eyelid muscles decreases, which can lead to heavier eyelids, eye bags, drooping eyelids and age-related wrinkles. Your facial expression looks tired and exhausted – even if you are full of energy. With an eyelid correction or eyelid lift, you can make your eye area shine again, make it look fresh and vibrant and thus rejuvenate your appearance with a naturally beautiful result.

Along with breast augmentation, liposuction and the treatment of wrinkles, eyelid lifting is one of the most frequently requested procedures in our practice in Zurich and Bad Ragaz. Whether you are interested in an upper eyelid lift, lower eyelid lift or combined eyelid lift – thanks to many years of specialist experience and state-of-the-art techniques, the risks of this operation are very low.

Treatments

Upper and lower eyelid lift

Upper eyelid lift: how drooping eyelids are removed

During an upper eyelid lift, the specialist doctor removes excess skin and fatty tissue. At the beginning of the operation, they make a wedge-shaped incision in the upper fold of the eyelid. This ensures that no scars are visible later when the eye is open. Small wrinkles around the eyes can also be corrected with the help of an eyelid lift on the upper eyelid.

Eyelid lifting does not usually require a general anaesthetic. In our practice, it is usually performed under twilight sleep, if desired also with local anaesthesia. You will find out more about this from your attending doctor during your consultation.

Lower eyelid lift – a truly beautiful eye look: this is how eye bags are removed

A lower eyelid lift is always advisable if there are bags under the lower eyelid. These are excess skin and usually fatty tissue that has sagged and bulged out of the eye socket.

The incision is made at the edge of the lower eyelid. The attending doctor then removes excess skin and tissue – very similar to the upper eyelid lift. Fat is often redistributed so that a deep tear trough is plumped up. This is an excellent way of concealing dark circles under the eyes. If necessary, the slack muscles can also be tightened.

Alternatively, the lower eyelid lift is performed through an incision on the inside of the eyelid. This operation does not leave any visible scars.

A general anaesthetic is not normally required for a lower eyelid lift either. Similar to the upper eyelid lift, we only administer a local anaesthetic with or without twilight sleep anaesthesia to patients in our practice before the operation.

Treatment procedure

Eyelid lift/eyelid correction

Prerequisite

In order to be able to carry out an eyelid lift itself, no special prerequisites have to be fulfilled. In general, an eyelid lift as a procedure in our skin clinic is routine and therefore associated with very low risks. Even though the operation is not now classed as risky, you should take some time off after an operation nevertheless.

Stay

An eyelid correction is an outpatient procedure. This means that you can go home the same day. If you wish and if necessary, several treatments can be performed on the eyelids at the same time in one operation (combination of upper and lower eyelid lift).

Anaesthesia

Eyelid surgery is performed without anaesthesia. Instead, the patient is either put into a twilight sleep or, if desired, locally anaesthetised.

Treatment

An eyelid lift involves excess skin and fatty tissue being removed from the sagging upper and/or lower eyelids. The small incisions required for this are made in the natural skin fold, which makes the resulting scar almost invisible. The suture is placed under the skin (intracutaneously) with continuous thread.

After the treatment

After the procedure, you will recover in our clinic and remain under supervision for at least one hour. You may then be collected.

The planned incision leaves a fine and very inconspicuous scar in your natural eyelid crease, which is usually no longer visible after a short time. With good and consistent preparation (e.g. abstaining from blood-thinning medicines), the bruising after the operation is usually not very pronounced. Nevertheless, you should generally set aside 7-10 days in which you partake in fewer social activities. After the removal or dissolution of the stitches on the eyelids, you can safely use eye make-up again as usual.

Frequently asked questions

During the surgical procedure, excess skin, as well as fat and muscle tissue, which causes the drooping of the eyelids, is removed. This is how the eyelid correction makes your tissue taut again. After the removal of the eye bags or the drooping eyelids, you will have a younger and fresher appearance.

The relatively minor procedure for an eyelid lift is performed on an outpatient basis under twilight sleep or, if desired, can also be performed under local anaesthetic. The duration is about 60 minutes. After the procedure, you will recover in our clinic and remain under supervision for at least one hour. You may then be collected.

A general anaesthetic is not necessary for an eyelid lift. The anaesthesia is given by a local anaesthetic or is carried out under twilight sleep.

The stitches are generally removed or dissolve from the seventh day after the operation. Depending on the individual length of the wound healing process, the removal of the stitches may be delayed by a few days.

After an eyelid lift, you should refrain from wearing make-up for a while. After the removal or dissolution of the stitches on the eyelids, you can safely use eye make-up again as usual.

Our surgeons work with special and cutting-edge operation and incision techniques to avoid leaving any visible scars after the operation as far as possible. Scars fade almost completely after only a few months.

After the operation, local swelling or bruising can occur, but these symptoms disappear after 7 to 10 days.

The risks of an eyelid lift are very low compared to other operations. Your attending doctor will inform you about the possible risks in a personal consultation.

Especially with increasing age, the skin gradually loses elasticity and begins to lose its resistance. For some people, this can be aesthetically unpleasing and can also cause disorders due to inflammation. Eyelid lifts due to ageing are very common, but so are eyelid lifts due to genetically determined drooping eyelids.

An eyelid lift may be necessary if a person suffers from drooping eyelids, very pronounced eye bags, drooping eyebrows or if the eyes appear small and tired.

An eyelid lift makes your eyes look brighter, more alert and youthfully fresh. With an eyelid lift, you can restore the freshness of your eyes.

Eyelid lifts are performed very frequently and are therefore one of our routine procedures. They take about 60 minutes. After the procedure, you will recover in our clinic and remain under supervision for at least one hour. You may then be collected.

The exact length of treatment for an eyelid lift depends on the correction performed.

In order not to impair the healing of the wound, exercise should be resumed two weeks after the eyelid surgery at the earliest.
